Mikumi National Park was established in 1964 and originally covered an area of 1,070km² (413mi²). In 1975, the park was expanded to its current size of 3,230km² (1,247mi²), and it is located just north of the well-known Nyerere National Park (Selous Game Reserve), Mikumi is the seventh largest national park in Tanzania and is the most accessible park from Dar es Salaam throughout the time.
